Mr Charles Durrant
MA MBBS BSc(Hons) FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Plast)
Charles qualified from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School, part of Imperial College London, in 1999.
After completing his general surgical training he was appointed to the highly regarded London Pan-Thames Regional Specialist Training Programme in Plastic Surgery.
He achieved the highest mark in the United Kingdom for the FRCS(Plast) exit exam and has received several awards and grants that have enabled him to study abroad the latest techniques in this exciting speciality.
He trained in Plastic Surgery for 8 years before he took up his current post as NHS Consultant in Plastic Surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
Charles is on the GMC Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery (4673358) and is a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).
As well as being comprehensively trained in all aspects of reconstructive surgery, Charles has received aesthetic training throughout his plastic surgery training. He has also undergone dedicated aesthetic and cosmetic fellowships at the McIndoe Surgical Centre in Australia. He regularly attends national and international conferences in both reconstructive and aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Charles performs all of his day surgery operating at Adnova Clinic but also works closely with the Nuffield Health Group and Spire Healthcare to provide a wide range of cosmetic surgery procedures that may not be suitable for day surgery. He is also recognised by all major providers of health insurance.
Charles’ main NHS interest lies in breast reconstruction following cancer surgery or congenital deformities and asymmetry. His philosophy is that not only can techniques involved in the reconstructive aspects of plastic surgery be translated to cosmetic practice but also that the operating surgeon must have exquisite knowledge of both reconstructive and cosmetic surgical principles to achieve the best outcomes in terms of both form and function.
Charles has a specific interest in the ethical issues surrounding plastic surgery. He used both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery as the central point of his Master’s thesis in Medical Ethics. Charles believes that, although Plastic Surgery rarely provides an opportunity for life-saving surgery, the opportunities for quality-of-life-saving surgery make it the most satisfying speciality there is.
Charles enjoys rugby coaching and refereeing, music and theatre. He lives on the South Coast and is married with 3 children.
